J S Bach St John Passion

300th Anniversary Concert on Easter Saturday 30 March 2024. Adrian Butterfield directing the London Handel Players

About This Concert

The St John Passion is one of the great choral masterpieces. It is an Easter Oratorio written by Bach in 1724 for performance on Good Friday in St Nicholas’ church in Leipzig. The work tells the story of the Passion of Christ according to the Gospel of St John, so there is no more appropriate setting for this anniversary concert than St John’s church.

The St John Passion tells the Easter story in a highly dramatic and moving way. It is sung by four soloists and a chorus, accompanied by an orchestra. The Evangelist acts as our guide to the Easter story. The main characters (Jesus, Judas, Peter, Pontius Pilate etc) play their parts, and the chorus acts as both the crowd and as a commentator on the action.

The St John Passion will be sung in German, with a full English translation in the programme.

Please make this concert the key to your Easter.

Tickets: Priced from £40.00 for premium seating; standard ticket price £30.00.
